Defense and Justice and Boca have things in common. First of all, they are the only representatives of Argentine football left in the cups.

Defensa will play the semifinal of the Sudamericana against Botafogo (September 27 and October 4) and Boca the one of the Libertadores against Palmeiras (28 of this month and 5 of the next).

But there is also something that links them to the League Cup: the two have 47 points in the annual table and are fighting for a place in the next Libertadores. That is why this afternoon's clash takes on greater importance.

Both of them fared better outside the League Cup, which so far was not given priority. Defensa's last win was on August 30, 2-1 against Botafogo for the Sudamericana. Then he added two draws (1-1 with Sarmiento and 2-2 with Godoy Cruz) and in between a penalty shootout victory (6-5 after 0-0) against Estudiantes de Río Cuarto in Copa Argentina.

Boca's last win was at the local level, 3-1 against Platense, on August 18, for the first date of the League Cup. Of course, after that he celebrated a lot the qualification to the semifinals in the Libertadores, by penalties, after two 0-0 against Racing. Also the passage in the Argentine Cup, again with Chiquito Romero as a hero, against Almagro.

In the local tournament he arrives with two 1-0 defeats in a row: against Sarmiento in Junín and with Tigre in La Bombonera. In all competitions, Boca has five games without wins, with three draws and two defeats.

That's why the coach Jorge Almirón was testing variants during the week and did not confirm the lineup. The good news is that he recovers Cristia Medina and Valentín Barco, two of the most outstanding in recent times. In training on Wednesday, both Edinson Cavani and Guillermo Pol Fernández, with serious muscle discomfort, worked separately but it is estimated that both will start today.

Defensa y Justicia, considered the best Argentine team by the IFFHS (see page 44), is alive in all three competitions and is always a difficult opponent. But Boca do have a better and stronger squad.
