Both teams have UEFA Champions League qualification ambitions and are looking to immediately respond to losses suffered against West Ham and Liverpool respectively. For Newcastle, this is not a team they would have wanted to face as they bid to avoid suffering a third consecutive loss.

These two clubs were arguably the biggest overachievers in the Premier League last season and there have been signs for both teams that they’re going to do well this year too.

Brighton opened the season with two 4-1 thrashings, first of new boys Luton Town and then Wolves before a 3-1 loss to West Ham, which came as a real shock. However, if we delve beyond the scoreline you can see that they largely dominated the game. They had double the amount of shots of West Ham, more on target, over three times the amount of passes, and had a huge 78% of possession. The reality is that West Ham played their counter-attacking brief perfectly, but on another day it could have been hugely different.

Still, Brighton have not lost consecutive matches since October 2022, which was when Roberto De Zerbi was taking charge of just his second and third matches after replacing Graham Potter.

With Julio Enciso out for Brighton, it’s the time to put the focus on Kaoru Mitoma’s influence against Newcastle. The Japan international already has three goal involvements this season and only Man City playmaker Phil Foden (six) has created more chances following a ball carry than Mitoma (five).

Despite losing to West Ham, Brighton are sixth in the league table and within striking distance of the early leaders. They have racked up the most shots (68), shots on target (30), touches in the opposition box (159) and accumulated the most xG (7.7) of any side in the Premier League so far this season.

For context on their attacking prowess, the 30 attempts on target is the most a team has had in their opening three games in a season for over a decade, with Manchester City – who had an incredible 31 in the 2011-12 season – the last side to generate a higher total.

A team with those impressive statistics are therefore not ideal opponents for Newcastle to face at a time they are desperate to avoid suffering a third straight Premier League defeat.

Newcastle only have three points so far this season, but again, just like that Brighton loss to West Ham, it doesn’t tell the whole story. After starting the season with a statement victory, that incredible 5-1 demolition of Aston Villa, they faced Man City and Liverpool. They were beaten by Man City but managed to keep it to a one-goal defeat, by no means a disgrace, and they had some moments in that game. Then last week they lost 2-1 to a Darwin Nunez-inspired Liverpool. They had the lead up until the 81st minute when the Uruguayan scored the first of two sensational finishes. For large parts, they were the better team and had some very positive moments.

So far through three games Newcastle have faced three of last year’s top seven clubs in the Premier League and in Brighton they face a fourth. It’s a seriously tough start to the season and when it comes to this match I can’t look beyond a draw, which is a result that would be good for both sides, especially after their defeats last weekend.

However, if I have to choose one winner, Brighton is the team. They have shown a better performances so far, will have the control of the game and the home crowd support.
