Rayo Vallecano has been over performing a lot in the start of the campaign. They beat Granada and Almeria, both 0:2. Against Almeria scored two lucky penalties given by the referee and against Granada scored two quick goals at 76’ and 80’. But both teams are a clear relegation contenders (Granada is newly promoted from 2nd division)

Now they have a toughest test at home against Atletico Madrid, one of the best teams in La Liga. Rayo has a weak squad, without interesting transfers and lost in the transfer market their key piece - coach Iraola. Furthermore, their best player Raul de Tomas isn’t at 100% yet. They also lost RB Fran Garcia, signed by Real Madrid.

They have very slow defenders which surely will struggle against quality and talented strikers, as Atletico has. I believe they will be fighting to avoid relegation, as their team isn’t better than last season. Their strong point last season was to be very brave and offensive, but this coach against strong/top teams use to play with a 5-3-2 system in his teams. Also against Almeria and Granada in the previous rounds conceded pretty much chances.

On the other hand, Atletico is coming from a goalless draw against Betis, which followed a solid victory 3:1 against Granada. At the moment, Atletico is in a very good level, showing the same as the last 15 rounds of the last season when they were the best spanish team according to their performances and results.

Against Granada, although they made a lazy first half, they managed to score three goals making a good demonstration of their quality upfront. And in the game against Betis suffered the heat and played a bored game, but showed a decent defense.

No major changes in the squad this season. Memphis looks in much better form and the young midfielder Barrios is a good replacement for Koke, who is injured.

I think that hosts will have a bit of overconfidence, given by the perfect start of the season with 2/2 victories without goals conceded. But they conceded chances and their goals were pretty lucky, especially the two penalties against Almeria. Atletico is a much more difficult team to play, as they have a lot of quality and are in great form.

Atletico is coming from a draw last weekend so surely will be looking for the victory here. They have plenty of alternatives in the lineup and also on the bench to beat Rayo, a team who is clearly worse than last season. Quality difference here is huge enough to bet on the away victory.

Furthermore, Atletico has a good H2H against Rayo: they have won 7 of the last 8 games played. Only drew 1:1 last season at home with Rayo’s goal at 93’ from penalty.
