Rosenborg take on Scottish Hearts at home in Lerkendal on Thursday evening, in the first of two qualifying matches for the Europa Conference League. The winner of the double head-to-head goes on to the playoffs, where the winner of that head-to-head goes to the group stage.

Rosenborg come from a hard-fought win away to Haugesund, when they secured a 2-1 victory just before the end, while Hearts opened the series with a 2-0 away win against St.Johnstone last Saturday.

After a lot of turbulence under Kjetil Rekdal at the start of this season, things look a lot better for Rosenborg after Svein Maalen took over. Maalen admittedly had a slow start with his new team, and Rosenborg lost the first three with him at the helm.

The upturn started with a strong win at home against form team Tromsø in mid-July. Since then, they have won three more games, and now stand with four straight victories in the Eliteserien.

Hearts are the oldest and most successful club from Scotland's capital Edinburgh. The club, which was founded in 1874, has won the Scottish league four times (most recently in 1959/60) and has finished second 14 times (most recently in 2005/06).

In 2021/22 they finished in third place behind the giants Celtic and Rangers, while last year they were fourth in the table.

In this year's season, they have only played one game, and they got off to a perfect start. With former Everton and Rangers stalwart Steven Naismith as the new manager, they kept a clean sheet, with Yutaro Oda and Lawrence Shankland providing the goals that secured three points.
