A new season of the French Ligue 2 gets underway on Saturday as Paris FC welcome SM Caen to the Stade de l'Aube in the night kick-off from Paris. Following their average but impressive campaign in the 2022-23 campaign, where Caen finished on the 5th position and four points ahead of Paris FC who finished on the 7th position. They both enter the new season on the back of couple of preseason friendly games played in an attempt to stay in good shape for the new season. Paris FC lost their most recent friendly game by 2-1 against Ajaccio. There were plenty of positives from the game for them though. Meanwhile, Caen played a 2-2 draw against Quevilly in their most recent friendly game played in July. They both start the new season with a new goal to secure promotion to Ligue 1, and they will be hoping that they have prepared enough to achieve that ambition. And for this season opener, I am expecting a win or a draw for the home team for the following reasons:

Firstly. Paris FC have had a relatively good/average preseason. They played four friendly games during the preseason preparations; they won one, drew two, and lost one. A lot of positives can be drawn from their preseason games. They have improved in their positional awareness, and have added more creativity in the middle of their pack. Their attacking instincts and play generally were showing some sparks as well, as they scored in all of their games except for one. They did end last campaign very strongly, finishing unbeaten in their last six games while winning 50% of them. With the new additions to them, they will be hoping on starting strongly in this new campaign.

Secondly. Caen are not looking like a side who have overcome the struggles they had during the closing stages of last campaign. Having been playing well during the season proper, they lost their momentum towards the end to finish the season on a back of couple of bad results. They lost three of their last six league games, and their away form was not encouraging as well, losing two of their last three games on the road. They have since the end of last campaign played three friendly games during the off season. They lost one, drew one, and won one. They did not show to have overcome the struggles of last season.

There was not much to separate these two teams last season. Paris FC do have the advantage over Caen in their last meetings, as they have beaten them five times in their last eight meetings. Paris FC seem to be in a better form than their current opponents, and they do have good home record, winning all three of their last home games. As this is a season opener, I will ride on the back of caution and expect a win or a draw for Paris FC.
