SJK vs HJK Helsinki

SJK welcome visitors from the capital of my home county, Helsinki, for this Finnish Veikkausliiga battle at OmaSP Stadion in the small city of Seinäjoki late Saturday evening Beijing time. This league is - as a whole - of low level by European standards. It has, however, improved quite a lot in the last 10 or so years. Football fans and us serious football bettors can expect one of the best matches in Veikkausliiga this season between these two strong teams! Most importantly, we have yet another very lucrative betting opportunity here! I have also previewed four very interesting Japanese J2 League games and two Women's World Cup games - with lucrative odds, of course! As I have mentioned before, even the biggest bookies put much more resources on the biggest leagues played in the summer - for example the Brazilian Serie A - or the MLS where even Leo Messi now plays for Inter Miami -  and often overlook Veikkausliiga which leads to frequent mistakes with the odds they offer! HJK are the most successful team in Finland by a wide margin and have even played in the Champions League group stage - a very long time ago though. Winning is in their "dna" - in the club culture and the quality and mental strength of the players to put it more clearly. This is something that is virtually impossible to estimate using "normal" data and models every professional football bettor probably uses when estimating probabilities.. HJK have now lifted the Veikkausliiga trophy three times in a row! On a more concrete note I can say that HJK is often at their best in tough games in the latter part of the season when stakes are usually sky-high - against dangerous opponents and in this case - against one of the challengers for the Veikkausliiga title! HJK have several former Finnish national team players in the squad - for example Joona Toivio, Nicholas Hämäläinen, Jukka Raitala and Perparim Hetemaj in the squad. These players are, with their vast experience, very important in difficult games - especially on the road! Hetemaj even played in the Serie A for several years and is still a super important player for HJK - especially as a leader - both on and off the pitch. Let's  not forget that Finland even made it to the EURO 2020 tournament where they beat Denmark 1-0 so the Finnish national team is not a weak one at all! They beat Slovenia earlier this summer and have a good chance of qualifying for the EURO 2024! 

HJK often find extra energy and confidence in  games such as this one! This is a bit weird in a way as they play several international UEFA games almost every season starting from July - sometimes all the way until autumn.. This of course puts a lot of both physical and mental strain on the HJK players but somehow they seem to enjoy playing challenging games with a tight schedule. At the moment they also have a very strong and deep squad  for the coach to choose the starting eleven from - and very importantly -  to bring in great players from the bench in the second half as well! Even so, I have, of course taken the tiring Molde game this Tuesday and the upcoming second leg in Norway next Wednesday into account here and I have, as a result, deducted 1.75% from HJK's chance of winning. I believe the bookies fail to fully understand HJK's true nature as a team and give this factor way too much emphasis. The odds offered by the biggest bookies with the largest betting limits are around 2.55 for SJK to win and this is much too low! Based on my sophisticated, in-depth expert analysis the visitors are solid favorites with a 42% chance of taking all three points and the +0.5 goals handicap is the professional bettor's clever bet here - with a high chance of winning! I expect the odds on HJK to drop before the kickoff as smart money is expected to pile up on the best team in Veikkausliiga! Despite the disappointing season HJK have, after all, lost just two games this season - to KuPS away from home and FC Lahti in Helsinki - the latter was a very unlucky loss as HJK had 60% ball possession and also recorded more shots on target, goal attempts, corner kicks (10-3), attacks and dangerous attacks. I want to highlight that Lahti have improved a lot in recent weeks and also played a much better game than usual. Let's not forget that HJK had a difficult phase last season as well until they beat RFS from Latvia in the first round of UEFA Champions League qualifying after two very hard games. They "found" their game and entered a "flow" state - with high confidence!

In 2021 they made it to the UEFA Conference League group stage where they won two games. The same year they suffered a narrow 3-4 defeat on aggregate to Swedish Malmö who went all the way in the UEFA Champions league group stage! I would say that at the moment HJK have an even better squad! They are however, not quite as strong as last season when they qualified for the UEFA Europa League Group stage beating for example a dangerous Slovenian team, Maribor and a much clearly bigger team than HJK, Danish Silkeborg on the way there! They faced the legendary Jose Mourinho's Roma, a very big Spanish team, Real Betis and Ludogorets in the group and only recorded one point. SJK, on the other hand, undeservedly somehow managed to defeated Flora in the UEFA Conference League qualification last season but stood no real chance against Norwegian Lillestrom in the second leg in Norway losing 2-5. In Seinäjoki SJK lost only 0-1 but the Norwegians were clearly the better team in this match as well. I could never, not even in my wildest dreams, imagine SJK ever making it to the UEFA Europa League group stage! Away from home HJK were defeated by Betis (3-0) and Roma, too, beat HJK in Italy 3-0 but the match looked amazingly balanced until HJK captain, Miro Tenho, took a stupid red card in the first half when the score was still 0-0.. At home they challenged both Roma and Betis surprisingly well! Roma won 2-1 and it could easily have been a draw as HJK had many chances to score and the 2-2 "goal" by Papua New Guinean David Browne was disallowed after a lengthy and a little questionable VAR review.. Betis took a 2-0 win in Helsinki but HJK challenged them to a balanced fight for the first about 35-37 minutes. Let's remember that Betis have challenged teams like Real Madrid in recent years and finished in 6th place in LaLiga last season. Against Bulgarian Ludogorets, a much bigger club than HJK with a player total market value of estimated at 44.55 million euros (Transermarkt.com), it was a balanced game at Bolt Arena and the score was 1-1. Moreover, on Tuesday HJK beat a very good and the most in-form team in the Norwegian Elitserien, Molde, with a total players market value of 25.80 million according to Transfermarkt,com, at Bolt Arena, downtown Helsinki, as big underdogs. HJK were priced around 5.20 to win by the bookies - and them winning probably shocked many football fans and experts - not me though! It was an UEFA Champions League qualification first leg. I want to highlight that Molde become the champions of Norway last season by a margin of stunning 18 points to Bodo/Glimt, who have done well in UEFA's competition in recent years. On the 21st of October 2021 Bodo/Glimt crushed Roma 6-1(!) at home in the UEFA Conference League! This awesome win over Molde must be a gigantic boost to their confidence and team spirit! Yes, Molde did have 63% ball possession and recorded more shots on goal and scoring attempts but HJK defended stunningly well and Molde were unable to create many really dangerous scoring chances. HJK, in fact, did have few chances to score more goals..

The game against Molde was the third game under the new coach Toni Korkeakunnas who is an underrated coach! Well, technically Korkeakunnas was suspended in HJK's latest Veikkausliiga game against Ilves at home. HJK won 1-0 and had much more ball possession than Ilves and also recorded more shots on and off goal, goal attempts, attacks and dangerous attacks. After the match he was filmed in the locker room fist pumping and high-fiving with the players shouting a well-known Finnish curse word  "perkele" like maniac - in a 100% positive way, of course! In terms of tactical abilities he is probably not quite as good as the ex-coach Toni Koskela, especially in terms of organizing the offense.. Koskela, known as an ultra- talented but sometimes a little "too ambitious" - and  even mean and/or impolite towards some of the players -  perfectionist here in Finland, was sacked most probably mainly due to arguments with the HJK boss Aki Riihilahti. Aki is an intelligent guy and great at managing HJK in terms of financial results long-term. He was a good midfielder, even playing for HJK in the Champions League group stage as well as in Finnish national team, in the past but he has a huge ego which has caused trouble with many people. One of these individuals is Mika "Bana" Lehkosuo" the former HJK head coach who was replaced by before Koskela who joined HJK from RoPS mid-season 2019. Even so, it is totally fair to say that the results - by HJK's high standards -  had been disappointing for too long and the team looked tense on the pitch - performing massively below their true potential! I want to highlight that luckily for Korkeakunnas and his employer has a very talented young assistant coach, Ossi Virta, who is widely known for his skills regarding improving offensive structure and creativity as well as players' individual goal-scoring skills long-term! Korkeakunnas is an experienced coach and is currently also working for the "Huuhkajat" (the Finnish national team) coaching team. He was working as an assistant coach for HJK last season already and is well-respected by the players, the HJK staff and the HJK community. The fans, about 8000 people, gave him a huge round of applause after the victorious Molde game! After a live interview he rushed towards the HJK "ultras" who erupted into an almost animal-like cheer of joy creating an amazing atmosphere at the arena! Toni seems to have massively relaxed the atmosphere in HJK which is more important than the betting market probably realizes.. Moreover, HJK have also recently got three very capable players - by Veikkausliiga standards I mean! These players are center-back Kristopher Da Graca (Cape Verdean/Swede) from a Swedish Allsvenskan team Sirius (loan), midfielder Filip Rogic and Finnish/ American left-back Nicholas Hämäläinen. Croatian/Swede Rogic is strong, smart and experienced player and can indeed play amazingly many positions! He is - at 750 000 euros - according to a well-known and respected German website, Transfermarkt.com, the highest valued player in the Veikkausliiga! The total market value of the HJK squad is 7.45 million which is still clearly too low! I would set the number at around 9.5 million. The SJK players have a total market value of 3.98 million which is marginally too high based on my expert opinion.

I want to remind my fans that HJK were, in part, disappointing in the past approximately two months mainly because of a massive number of injuries.. When Korkeakunnas arrived HJK had, quite amazingly, only 13-14 fully fit first team players! What a horrible situation! At the moment Matti Peltola, Aleksi Paananen, Oliver Pettersson and Valtteri Moren are injured. However, of these four only Peltola is an important missing player. No HJK players are suspended. As for SJK, Matias Vainionpää is injured and 100% sure out. Martti Haukioja is questionable at the time of writing this free in-depth analysis early Saturday morning Beijing time. SJK, too, have no players suspended. In the first game under the new coach HJK traveled to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the UEFA Champions League qualifying second leg battle. The hosts, Larne, won 2-1 and proved that the bookies and myself as well  - to some extent - had underestimated them.. HJK were much better in the first half and took a 1-0 lead and could easily have scored 1-2 more goals.. In the second half, however, HJK became too passive - defensive that is - on the pitch and Larne got, as result, even a surprisingly clear control of the game. The fit, hard-fighting and physically strong Larne players put, boosted by the ecstatic home crowd, massive pressure on the HJK defense - especially through  seemingly endless long balls! They managed to level the score through a somewhat lucky penalty and eventually made it 2-1 - totally deservedly!  HJK were very disappointing in the first leg in Helsinki despite winning 1-0. They were the much more-skilled team on the pitch though but lacked speed, creativity and passing accuracy throughout the game even the crows got frustrated and especially the ultras kept shouting "Koskela out". The big striker Bojan Radulovic scored the winning goal from a penalty kick in the 4th minute of the game. The entertaining and emotional match in Belfast went to 2x15 minutes extra time/match and finally HJK were able to prove their class and the ability to control themselves in a high-pressure situation - as well as valuable international experience gained in previous years.. The 3-2 (on aggregate) goal was an own goal by S. Want but HJK striker Riku Riski along with a current Finnish national team player Pyry Soiri were the architects behind the goal! Surely it was a massive relief for HJK..

HJK are currently in 3rd place in the Veikkausliiga with 31 points to their account after 17 games. However, their number of expected points (xPTS) is 34.12! HJK's goal difference is good - 25:12. KuPS from Kuopio are currently in second place in the league table but as most of my loyal fans know by now I never let the standings fool me in any way! This is very important in long-term profitable football betting! KuPS are also definitely better than SJK by pure class but the hosts do deserve to be in the 3rd place in the power rating that reflects the teams' pure class. However, they are not significantly better than AC Oulu (4th in the standings),  the under-performing but also unlucky in terms of xPTS points, Honka, and Inter Turku! SJK did beat Inter Turku in their latest Veikkausliiga game 2-1 away from home as solid favorites, priced around 2.30 to win when the match started. I need to mention that Inter were far from their best in this game.. Yes, SJK were slightly the better team but it could easily have been a draw as well.. Before this SJK were lame to say the least away from home against FC Lahti as very clear favorites according to the bookie - priced around 1.95 to win.. Yes, they had more ball possession than Lahti but the hosts even recorded more shots on target. SJK have 35 points in their pocket but their number of xPTS is just 28.67! SJK being lucky as a whole this season must be the main reason behind them being overvalued here.. The hosts have netted the ball "only'' 21 times in Veikkausliiga so far and HJK have a very clear edge in this area of the game!

The player for my fans to follow very closely here is the still very young but super-talented and extremely fast Topi Keskinen, 20, who scored an awesome goal against Molde after an irresistible run - the goal was assisted by the HJK legend, experienced Japanese midfielder Atomu Tanaka, 35. Keskinen joined HJK from MP (Ykkönen, the second tier of Finnish football) for this season and I expect him to have raised even many big clubs' interest so far! He has been much better than anyone could realistically have hoped for.. There is no denying the fact that SJK have defended very well in most games this season..  Let's hope Keskinen, Lucas Lingman, Tanaka and perhaps Radulovic can beat their defense today! SJK have allowed just 10 goals in Veikkausliiga so far. However, in their latest five games they have kept a clean sheet just once.. Against AC Oulu they lost 1-4 some weeks ago - at home - after a horrible defensive performance that proved that the skilled and creative enough players can break their defense! I want to highlight that their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is 15.14! Last season they finished in 6th place - a stunning 23 points behind HJK! Yes, they are better this season but many of their players have played clearly above their normal level so far and this cannot go on forever.. On paper/ in terms of players total market value they are marginally stronger than last season.. The teams last locked horns in Helsinki on the 3rd of June and it was a 0-0 draw. HJK were very fast from their best in this game but still had 56% ball possession and recorded more goal attempts, corner kicks, attacks and dangerous attacks - 54-39. The home advantage in this league is, on average, significantly lower than in the big European leagues, such as the Spanish LaLiga or the English Premier League for example. In this game - with huge stakes -  it is even lower than normally as at least 250 very loud and enthusiastic HJK fans are expected to travel to Seinäjoki today!  Lastly, I want to mention that SJK have not beaten HJK in any of the latest five games between the two teams!
