This should be a tight and equal game. Nigeria has some players that are going to wow this tournament, and they’re always going to be a tough out. Having competed in every single Women’s World Cup, they’re used to the bright lights, the intensity, and the pressure. And they can dish out some of their own.

Nigeria have been African champions a record 11 times and have appeared at more World Cups than any other side from their continent. They have plenty of World Cup pedigree, having played at every single edition of the tournament so far.

Barcelona’s top scorer from last season, Asisat Oshoala, is someone I believe can trouble the Canadian backline with her strength, pace and dribbling ability. She’s a huge goal threat while also equally capable of creating chances for her teammates. She has scored 30 goals in 41 appearances so far, added to the 21 she made in the league, scoring almost in every single match.

But she also has a good replacement with Gift Monday from Tenerife, a young star with only 21 years old but a lot of quality and goal.

Canada are the Olympic champions and although they haven’t had the best year so far, I still believe they have some incredible talent and a winning mentality. Canada is not here to show that they’re a contender. They want to be viewed as a favorite to win the Women’s World Cup and add to the gold medal they won in the 2020 Olympics. They have veterans, they have players in their prime, and they have some young talent that’s ready to take the world by storm. They want to show the gold medal was no fluke, and they can overcome all the obstacles in front of them to claim the trophy they desire. But I don't see it as very easy for them.

They have some players like Christine Sinclair who is 40 years old which will struggle with the Nigerian' pace. Their attack is dangerous but weakened with the absence of Janine Beckie, ruled out of the tournament with an ACL injury.

Canada are fresh off an underwhelming performance in the SheBelieves Cup in May which included losses to the USWNT and Japan. The Canadians are well set defensively with the pairing of Kadeisha Buchanan and Vanessa Gilles but Nigeria’s striker Asisat Oshoala is a proven scorer capable of cashing in on any openings.

Both teams have a little too much experience of losing World Cup matches, with Nigeria having lost more games at WWCs than any other side (19), and Canada following close behind them having lost the third most (14). I see both teams being quite aggressive in their approach, but while the likeliest game script is for Canada to dominate possession and Nigeria to wait for counter-attacking opportunities, I expect scoring chances at both ends.

When these teams met in a friendly in April 2022, they served up an exciting 2-2 draw, despite Canada having 71% of the ball. Nigeria twice took the lead, but were pegged back both times. Canada only just managed to rescue a draw in the 88th minute.

In short, the Super Falcons will not be overawed. I see them scoring some goals here and avoiding a big defeat.
