Riga FC will host Vikingur Reykjavik at the Skonto stadions for a Europa Conference League Qualification match on this Thursday night. This would be the first meeting between these two teams in European competitions. Riga FC is currently first-placed in the league table in Latvian championship with 3 points ahead of the second-placed RFS, and it seems that the race of these teams for the championship title will last until the very end. Last year, they lost that battle with Valmiera, who finished ahead of them in 1st place with 4 more points. The competition in Latvia is one of those that starts during the spring months and has already been played in the 22nd round of the current season. A similar story is happening with the club from Iceland. Vikingur is currently in 1st place in the domestic league. They have nine points more than Keflavik who are placed on the second position. The Icelandic championship is also one of those that, due to the special cold climate, starts much earlier during the spring. In the last round, they played an excellent match against Keflavik, which ended with total of 6 goals scored. The final score was 3-3. I am however expecting a win for the home side in this encounter for the following reasons:

Firstly. Riga are the toppers of the Latvian top flight, and they secured the top-most spot in style as well. All through the campaign they lost just once, and at home they have a 100% winning record barring only two draws. Riga FC will aim to build on the back-to-back victories over Liepaja (3-1) and Auda (1-0), and they are likely to adopt yet another attack-minded approach against Vikingur. They have one of the best attacks in the division, and have been very consistent with their performances.

Secondly. Vikingur Reykjavik are also at the top of the Iceland top division. They too are in great form, and are consistently finding the back of the net. They however did miss out on wins in two of their past four road trips. Comparatively, their consistency is not at the same level as their counterparts. Riga FC have been quite formidable at home. Not only did they win eight of their last nine appearances at home, but the last they lost at their home ground was back in November. And note that most of these performances came along with great scorecards as well. As a matter of fact, they slotted in five or more goals in two of their past five home matches.

Both of these teams are in great form, and are absolutely determined to secure a spot in the Conference League. But, Riga do have the upper hand. Their consistency in both general and home form is a big advantage to them, and I see them winning this encounter tonight.
