SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES - SEATTLE SOUNDERS

Interesting game here where I see San Jose favorites.

San Jose is 7th on the table, 6 points below second-placed Seattle Sounders.

They have lost just one home game so far after 11 played, which was against leaders St Louis City (1:2).

Although they are winless in the last 5 games, I see good potential on this team and surely will improve soon. They have a lot of quality, with players like Cristian Espinoza who is one of the best forwards in the MLS: not only goals (10 scored so far + 5 assists), also good finding spaces for through balls, and a real nightmare for the defenders.

Starter goalkeeper Daniel is out for this match due to a red card, but replacement James Marcinkowski made great saves in the game against Los Angeles, showing that he is a reliable last line of defence.

They have some other players out: Nathan (injured), Monteiro Jamiro (injured) Cade Cowell and Jackson Yueill for international duties. They have been starters some times, being the 3-5th players with more lineups in their positions. Nothing important, as they have good replacements.

On the other hand, the Seattle Sounders go into this game after winning two in a row, both against teams who are below them in the table. The last one against Vancouver Whitecaps (2:3) came at 91’ after a red card to the hosts, with a late winner for Seattle.

Wednesday’s match at the San Jose Earthquakes will be the Sounders’ second of three games this week. The Sounders are just 0-3-3 in their previous short-rest matches.

In that match played just 3 days ago coach Schmetzer decided to not make any subs till the stoppage time. And changes are expected for this fixture. As he said: “We were playing well”. “I don’t know if the game required any subs. We’ll make changes for Wednesday against San Jose but I think that group of players deserved a chance to win the game”.

They have some absences for this match: Xavier Arreaga (injury), Ethan Dobbelaere (injury), Stefan Frei (injury), Sota Kitahara (injury), Kelyn Rowe (injury), Jordan Morris (international duty) and Cristian Roldan (international duty).

A total of 7 players, including starter goalkeeper - Frei, topscorer - Morris, 9 goals, and other reserves.

Before this good winning streak of two games in a row, they were 5 games winless and only achieved one victory in 8 games, so it’s clear that they are a very irregular team. Made a great start of the season winning 6 of the first 9 rounds, but after that they achieved only 4 more in 11 rounds.

The defense is their strongest point, with only 20 goals conceded (best defense in the West Conference), but 15 of them were conceded as visitors.

So although the table says the opposite, I see potential in San Jose to win here. They have potential to improve while Seattle is in a poor level in spite of their two recent victories. Furthermore, the two missings of topscorer and starter goalkeeper for guests, without a reliable replacement, are quite important.

NEW YORK RED BULLS - CINCINNATI

Totally disagree with this odds.

NYRB are 10th on the table, which is a fair position given their value and squad quality. At home they aren’t very strong either, with only 5 victories in 11 games (they have 6 in total after 21 rounds).

After winning only one of their first eleven matches, NYRB excused Gerhard Struber from duty and named assistant coach Troy Lesesne as his full-time replacement. Since the change in gaffer, the Red Bulls have gone 5-2-2 and pushed themselves up the table and into playoff contention. So currently NYRB has the interim coach as head one.

They are lacking goal, scoring just 20 goals so far, having the second worst attack in the league after Toronto who is one above the bottom. They are laboring for goals in 2023. Former FC Cincinnati midfielder and 2019 No. 1 overall MLS SuperDraft pick Frankie Amaya leads the team with just three goals, all of which came in New York's last three matches.

Designated player striker Dante Vanzeir, who scored a late equalizer for the Red Bulls in the May 23 U.S. Open Cup match against Cincinnati, has two goals in 13 appearances.

The Red Bulls enter Wednesday's match coming off a controversial, upset win against 10-man New England Revolution on Saturday.

They are missing seven players due to a combination of injuries, suspension, and international duty. Serge Ngoma (injured), Lewis Morgan (injured), Steven Sserwadda (injured), Dru Yearwood (injured), Elias Manoel (injured), Cory Burke (international duty) and John Tolkin (international duty).

Some of them are reserves, but Manoel, Burke and Tolkin are solid starters.

On the other hand, Cincinnati is the best team in the whole MLS. With 45 points in 21 games, they have the best results between both Conferences. In the Easter Conference are solid leaders with only 2 defeats so far and 7 points (+ one game less) advantage with Nashville.

They are in a bad run with 3 games without a victory, so surely will be motivated for this fixture and looking for another victory to stay at the top of the table. One of the defining features of this FC Cincinnati team has been its strict discipline and focus on the task and match at-hand − until now.

They have an important fixture against Nashville in the next round, which could be used to significantly improve its position. Accounting for both matches this week, Cincinnati could be as many as 13 points clear of second place in the East by late Saturday night. Conversely, FCC also could enter the league break only one point ahead.

FC Cincinnati is still battling the absences of Brandon Vazquez and Matt Miazga due to USMNT duty after the Americans progressed past Canada on Sunday at TQL Stadium to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal round. Newly-acquired and high-profile scorer Aaron Boupendza is considered day-to-day this week, and could be starter for this fixture already. Key player Acosta, with 10 goals and 7 assists, is available and coming from two great performances against New England Revolution and Charlotte, with 1 goal and two assists.

So we have a home team that is having a good run but lacking consistency this season. The double chance for Cincinnati, who has been the best team in the whole MLS so far and dominating the Conference, is surely the correct bet here. We can’t ignore the few defeats (only 2) they have had so far, and given their poor results recently, motivation will be high for this match.
