SalPa vs Inter Turku

SalPa welcome visitors from Turku in Salo for this Finnish Cup 1/8-finals late Tuesday evening Beijing time. By European standards we cannot expect a high-level game here. Salo is a small city near Turku. They do not have a big number of fans and the home advantage is here is much smaller than on average in this competition. A decent number of Inter Turku fans are expected to be in Salo supporting the team today. The visitors play in the Veikkausliiiga, the first tier of Finnish football. Last season they even played in the UEFA Champions League qualification but did not succeed well, mainly due to losing their key striker, Benjamin Källman. The opponent was also strong. They have clearly improved from early season as key players have raised their level recently. They also have a good coach, Jarkko Wiss. He is a strict coach but seems to suit Inter Turku well.

SalPa are a young and experienced team who are currently in 9th place in the Ykkönen standings with 10 points in the pocket. However, their number of expected points (xPTS) is just 8.21. The difference between Veikakusliiga and Ykkönen is substantial! The Ykkönen teams have a significantly lower players’ salary budgets than any Veikkausliiga club. This is the case when comparing Inter and SalPa too. In terms of players’ total market value according to a German website, Transfermarkt.com, too Inter Turku are at a completely different level. The hosts are a small team even by Ykkönen standards and were promoted to this league from Kakkonen for this season. I expect them to struggle in Ykkönen but are still not the worst team in this league. They were pretty strong early season but have now lost four games in a row and have clearly declined. Inter on the other hand have won 5/7 of their latest matches. In their most recent match in the Finnish Cup they crushed Inter Turku II 8-0!The biggest, sometimes rather sharp bookies offer the visitors odds of around 1.65 to win by at least two goals’ margin. This is definitely too high. Inter are massively better in all areas of the game and are gigantic favorites here. They have a good chance of winning this competition!
