Real Betis vs Valencia

Betis welcome Valencia for this Spanish LaLiga round 38 battle at Estadio Benito Villamarín in Seville very early Monday morning Beijing time. This is the final round of play. LaLiga, is in my opinion, the second-best league on the planet after the English Premier League. Football fans and us serious football bettors can expect a  match of mediocre by LaLiga standards here. In fact, I expect a relaxed performance from Betis. They have nothing to play for left this season – they will finish in 6th place. It has been a satisfactory season for them. With a little less injuries this spring – and a hint of lock they may well have been able to finish 4th – above Real Sociedad. The 4th place would have brought them a place in the prestigious UEFA Champions League.. They have 59 points to their account. They have netted the ball just 45 times in LaLiga this season. There is no denying that this is a little disappointing. . They have lacked some creativity and speed offensively to match the very best LaLiga teams, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Even so, their number of expected goals (xG) is 54.12. Their defense has been somewhat solid and they have conceded 40 goals so far. However, their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is moderately bigger. Even so, they have a clear edge over Valencia in all areas of the game – with the best lineups. However, the hosts' excellent coach is expected to rotate the squad here..

Real Betis remain without the services of important Nabil Fekir due to an injury, but the squad is otherwise in good shape, with German Pezzella available again following a suspension. Their coach Pellegrini has plenty of options for change in the forward positions. Juanmi, Joaquin and Willian Jose all pushing to feature right from the kickoff, but it could ultimately be the same starting eleven that started against Girona. Sergio Canales, Rodri and Ayoze Perez should again support Iglesias in the final third of the pitch. William Carvalho and Guido Rodriguez  are expected to line up as the two central midfielders. Valencia, meanwhile, will again be missing Marcos de Sousa due to a knee nasty injury, but their coach Baraja still has a strong squad to choose from. Samuel Lino's goal off the bench against Espanyol last time out is likely to earn him a place in the final third of the field. Justin Kluivert should again lead the line for the visitors, while Javi Guerra and Diego Lopez are also expected to retain their places in the starting lineup here. Yes, technically Betis have no true motivation as there is nothing to gain – or lose - in the standings. However, I trust their coach as a leader and they will surely give their best in front of loyal, loud and demanding fans! It will be an emotional match for 41-year-old club legend Joaquin, who will retire this summer, and he is likely to be introduced at some stage of the second half. Many talented young, talented players will be offered a chance to prove their skills here! I believe the hosts want to ”play for” Joaquin and the fans – thanking them for their support and club legend for his heroic effort for the club over the years! No club wants to lose the last game in LaLiga - a draw would probably be acceptable though..

Valencia are, in reality, safe from relegation as they are in 13th place with 41 points to their account.. The teams who finish in 18-20th places are relegated to LaLiga2 for next season. They would have deserved more points in terms of expected points (xPTS) though. They have a negative score difference of 41:44 and their number of xGA is 55.12! I would not be surprised to see Betis score more than once here – despite the offensive limitations. Indeed, they have no need to defend particularly hard here.. The biggest bookies with the largest stakes rather weirdly see Valencia as favorites here offering them odds of around 2.40 to take all three points at the time of writing this preview Sunday morning Beijing time. I expect their odds to go up though as smart money is expected to pile up on Betis – unless unexpected news concerning the starting lineups arrive.. I have to strongly disagree with the betting market here! The hosts may not have a clear edge with the expected lineups but the home advantage is substantial and Betis should be the favorites! The +0.5 goals handicap option on them is an excellent bet with the current odds! They have lost just one of their most recent games. This loss, against the massively motivated Getafe on the 24th of May was an unlucky one!  Indeed, Betis had 71% ball possession and recorded many more shots on goal (4-2), goal attempts and dangerous attacks. They generated 1.45 in xG – Getafe's number was just 0.42.

In their most recent match, the hosts were strong and beat a surprisingly good team, Girona in 9th place with 49 points, away from home priced close to 4.00 by the bookies to win. Yet another example of the bookies underestimating Betis! They had just 46% ball possession but recorded many more shots on goal (7-3), goal attempts (18-9) as well as attacks. Valencia took an immensely valuable point in their most recent match against a pretty poor Espanyol at home. It was a 2-2 and sent Espanyol to LaLiga2 for next season.. Before this they last away from home to Mallorca despite a decent performance. Valencia should have been better this season but they just did not play according to their maximum potential.. I do not fully trust their coach tactically - or as leader - and do not expect them to improve here at this stage of the season..
