Philadelphia Union came very close to winning the Supporters’ Shield in 2022 and it is worth pointing out that they would have done so were the MLS sorting for teams level on points based on goal difference, as it is in most leagues throughout the world, rather than wins. It then took a penalty shootout to separate themselves and LAFC in the MLS Cup final.

Heading into 2023 the Union have kept their strong team from last season intact and strengthened their depth. They maintain their direct, intense brand of football, and they are once again challenging LAFC to win the title this season.

They have been irregular this season so far, dealing with the CONCACAF and the US Open Cup (where they are out already) but started to look much more like themselves in the last few games, improving a lot. They have shown flashes of brilliance so far but are yet to find a consistent run of results.

Some players like Julian Carranza and Daniel Gazdag have been impressive this season and will look to add their goal tallies in this game.

On the other hand, DC United has big problems for this match. Several key players are out: Fountas, Ruan, Rodriguez, Robertha, Birnbaum, Najar, Santos and Jeahze. This means important players from the defensive starting line: Birnbaum (10) and Ruan (9) have been the players with more starting lineups in all MLS rounds so far, while Jeahze (6) and Najar (5) are the natural replacements.

Santos and Fountas (both with 8 starting lineups) are also important players for the team, while Robertha (4) is a rotation player. Rodriguez has a long term injury but is also a very important player for the team.

Coach Rooney has been forced to call up a few young players to fill the bench.

We must remember that both teams played just 3 days ago, so rotations are possible here. And here Philadelphia has much more advantage as he has just a couple of injuries, a deeper squad, and more/better players to choose from. They are a team accustomed to playing CONCACAF so have a much better squad, while DC has a shorter squad and have to deal with missing this week.

Last season Philadelphia destroyed DC United in both games, winning 0:6 and 7:0, showing a huge superiority from first to last minute. This season lineups will be pretty similar, even weaker for DC United due to the injuries. Philadelphia Union are in better form at the moment, however, and should be able to win this game.
