Bulgaria will host Montenegro at the Huvepharma Arena on Friday night in the opening round of the 2024 European Championship qualifiers. The visitors will be looking to kick start their qualification campaign with a win as they target to appear at their ever first Euros in 2024. Both teams are just two places separate from each other in the FIFA rankings with Montenegro placed on 69th and Bulgaria placed on 71st. This is going to be a tough match between both teams. I feel like Montenegro have a little edge, and will likely get a win from this match. But there is a very high chance that it could also end in a draw. These are my reasons:
Firstly. Bulgaria have a poor form in the Euro qualifications. In their 2020 Euro qualification run, they had gone winless in their first seven matches before winning their last group match 1-0 against Czech Republic with so much struggle. They just have a record of struggling through the Euro qualifying phase. They last made appearance at the European Championship back in 2004. So, it is almost two decades of under-performing in the qualifying phase. I do not see that changing in this match against Montenegro.
Secondly. After their last outing in the European Championship qualifiers which was unsuccessful, Montenegro replaced their national team manager. They appointed Miodrag Radulovic, and was charged with making sure that Montenegro qualified for the 2024 tournament. The new manager will be hoping to do a better job in this campaign. We will be hoping to seeing this energy and mentality tranferred to the players, and they sure should be turning up against the Bulgarians.
So for these reasons, I believe that Montenegro can take all the points from this match or share the spoils with Bulgaria because Bulgaria are capable of putting in a good performance too.
