After some rest, the UEFA Champions League is back! This and next week the 2nd round of TOP16 games will happen and one of the matches on Tuesday night is going to be between Chelsea and Borussia. In February, teams met in Germany and Borussia won 1:0. To qualify for the next round, Chelsea needs to win at least by 2 goal margin but I'm predicting that Borussia isn't going to lose in the regular time.
Chelsea has played very poorly this season. Since the first TOP16 game against Borussia, the English team has played 3 games in the Premier League. Chelsea lost at home to the 2nd worst team in the league Southampton which was followed by a loss to Tottenham on the road but last weekend they were able to beat Leeds United at home (1:0). This was Chelsea's first win since January 15th and they have only 2 wins in 2023, and both have been against Leeds and Crystal Palace. In order to win, Chelsea is desperate for goals but they have scored only 4 times in the last 11 games.
A much different breed has been Borussia. The team has won all 10 games since the restart of the season! During this time, Borussia has scored 25 goals and conceded only 8 or less than a goal per match! The most impressive win was on Friday against another German Champions league team - RB Leipzig. As of right now, Borrusia is tied with Bayern for the 1st place in the Bundesliga.
There are many players on Chelsea's injury list. Armando Broja, Edouard Mendy, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva are all expected to miss out, but Christian Pulisic, N'Golo Kante and Reece James could be back while Mason Mount won't be available because of too many yellow cards. Roster problems also are in Borussia's camp as Karim Adeyemi is out while Julian Ryerson is suspended due to yellow cards. Four more Dortmund players won't be available on Tuesday.
Both teams are having roster problems but Borussia has been playing much better. Chelsea is a mess this whole season and their last decent win was against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Borussia is flying right now, they are just unstoppable and I'm confident that they will secure a place in the next stage during the regular time. Borussia has progressed from 5 of their 6 Champions League knockout stage ties where they've won the 1st leg.
