Furthermore, Atletico recorded many more scoring chances (20-10), shots on goal (5-2), total passes, completed passes, attacks and dangerous attacks as well. Before this they beat R. Oviedo, a pretty small team from LaLiga2, 2-0 away from home in a Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) clash but did not impress me at all. The hosts recorded just one goal attempt less than Atletico – 11. Oviedo, quite surprisingly, even recorded more dangerous attacks.. The visitors were massive favorites in this match – priced around 1.45 to win during the 90 minutes of play according to the bookies. On the 29th of December they beat Elche at home as massive favorites 2-0 but the match was more balanced than the final score would suggest..Atletico did deserve the win as they recorded 1.54 in xG. I believe many football fans expected them to dominate an opponent this bad..However, Elche, the rock-bottom team in this league with only four (!) points did have their chances too – their xG was 0.78.

In the UEFA Champions League Atletico were a major disappointment this season! They were the rock-bottom team in Group B with just one win and five points. Their goal difference in this pretty easy group with FC Porto, Club Brugge KV and Bayer Leverkusen was 5:9. They were not even close to qualifying for the Play Offs! Almeria, on the other hand, were promoted to this level for this season and are having a positive season. They are in the 14th place with 17 points and have a score difference of 17:25. They are improving all the time - the tempo and opponents' players' skill level are much higher in LaLiga than in the 2nd tier.. At home they have won 5/8 LaLiga games and the loud home fans are a massive boost for Almeria! In their most recent match they were strangely passive and lost to Real Sociedad as clear underdogs 0-2 at home. R. Sociedad are of course a very strong team and even beat Manchester United last autumn in Europa League! The visitors were very good as a whole in this game and shut down Almeria's offense in a brilliant way. I would not react too heavily to this match. Before this they played four games without losing!  On the 30th of December they would have deserved a win away from home against Cadiz after recording 2.41 in xG – Cadiz's number was 1.43. Furthermore, the hosts played well in three friendly matches during the Word Cup break beating a strong Italian club, Lazio, 2-0 and playing a 1-1 draw against Torino, a pretty strong Italian team. They also beat a decent Scottish team, Hearts, 1-0. I expect a pretty defensive battle and the goal expectancy is much smaller than the bookies think. The chance of under 2.5 total goals to be scored is 57%. Atletico will be without injured Carrasco and Gimenez – both due to a muscle injury. Savic is suspended because of a red previous red card. As for Almeria the situation is almost optimal – Martos is possibly out though.
