José Manuel Llaneza, vice-president of Villarreal CF, died this Thursday at the age of 74. He was a key figure in the yellow submarine’s success in La Liga and in Europe from promotion in Compostela in 98 to the Europa League title in Gdansk in 2021.

He introduced the current owner Roig to the club of Villarreal. The powerful economic investment of Roig, advised by Llaneza, took Villarreal to the elite. His current replacement, Fernando Roig Negueroles, son of the president and current CEO, has grown up in the club learning from Llaneza's wisdom.

Llaneza was an excellent planner and this helped the club to quickly overcome the declines of 1999 and 2012. Llaneza was specialized in the South American market and he brought in players like Martín Palermo, Riquelme, Diego Cagna, Battaglia, Sorín and Forlán.

Today’s match will be dedicated to Llaneza and head coach Unai Emery asked his players to be 100% “at every moment of the 90 minutes”. I think this means too much for a weak side such as Almeria.
